The 2026 Jeep Recon Has Arrived — 650 Horsepower, Trail Rated, and Fully Electric

Jeep just did something that a lot of people said could not be done. They built a fully electric SUV that earned a Trail Rated badge, removed the doors, kept the spare tire on the back, and put 650 horsepower under the floor. The 2026 Jeep Recon is the most powerful vehicle Jeep has ever made, and it happens to produce zero tailpipe emissions. For the off-road community across Smithers, Terrace, Kitimat, Burns Lake, and Northern BC, this is the most significant Jeep launch in years.

What the Recon Actually Is

The Recon is a five-passenger, mid-size SUV built on the same STLA Large platform as the Wagoneer S. It uses dual electric motors producing a combined 650 horsepower and 620 lb-ft of torque with standard four-wheel drive. A 100.5-kilowatt-hour battery pack provides an estimated 230 miles of range in the launch Moab trim. It hits 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, which makes it faster than most sports cars and every other SUV in Jeep’s lineup. But straight-line speed is not the point. The Recon was designed to go where Wranglers go, and it earned the Trail Rated badge by passing the same five gruelling tests that every Wrangler and Gladiator must complete: traction, water fording, manoeuvrability, ground clearance, and articulation.

Open Air and Removable Everything

The Recon is the only electric vehicle on the market with tool-free removable doors. The rear-quarter glass and swing-gate glass also come off, and there is an available Sky One-Touch Power Top that opens at the push of a button. A dual-pane sunroof comes standard. On a clear July day driving through the Bulkley Valley toward Babine Lake, the Recon offers an open-air experience that rivals the Wrangler while delivering instant electric torque on every trail. For Jeep owners in Houston, Telkwa, and Hazelton who love the Wrangler lifestyle but want something with more interior refinement and technology, the Recon bridges that gap.

Off-Road Capability for Northern BC Terrain

The Recon Moab comes with 33-inch all-terrain tires, up to 9.1 inches of ground clearance, Selec-Terrain with five driving modes, rock rails, and Selec-Speed Control for precision crawling over rough terrain. Jeep also integrated a Trails Offroad app that provides trail maps and route information directly through the 14.5-inch touchscreen, the largest screen ever in a Jeep. For the forest service roads around Smithers, the logging roads near Burns Lake and Fraser Lake, and the backcountry access routes around Granisle and New Hazelton, the Recon is designed to handle the same terrain that Wranglers have owned for decades, with the added advantage of instant torque and a low centre of gravity from the floor-mounted battery.

The Range Question for Northern BC

The honest conversation about the Recon in this market is range. At 230 miles per charge, it covers a round trip from Smithers to Terrace with room to spare, or Smithers to Burns Lake and back comfortably. But Smithers to Prince George is roughly 370 kilometres one way, which pushes the limits. DC fast charging can take the battery from five to 80 percent in about 28 minutes, but charging infrastructure in Northern BC is still developing. The Recon is an outstanding vehicle for daily driving, weekend trail runs, and regional trips in the Bulkley Valley and along the Highway 16 corridor. For longer trips, the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid or a gas Wrangler remains the more practical choice until the charging network catches up with the terrain.
