Fishing and Camping Season in Northern BC — Getting Your Vehicle Ready for the Backcountry
The rivers are opening, the lakes are thawing, and for the next five months, Northern BC becomes one of the best places on the continent to fish and camp. Whether you are heading to Babine Lake for sockeye, the Bulkley River for steelhead, Morice Lake for a weekend of solitude, or one of the dozens of forest service recreation sites scattered between Burns Lake and Prince Rupert, your vehicle is the thing that gets you there and gets you home. Getting it ready before the season starts is the difference between a great trip and a recovery call on a logging road with no cell service.
Tires: The Single Most Important Thing
Forest service roads in Northern BC are not gravel highways. They are rutted, muddy, washed out, and unpredictable, especially in May and June when snowmelt turns hard-packed surfaces into soft clay. If you are running highway all-season tires on your RAM 1500 or Grand Cherokee, you are asking for trouble the moment you leave pavement. Switch to a good all-terrain tire with an aggressive sidewall and the mountain snowflake rating. If you regularly access remote lakes and river launch points around Houston, Granisle, Fraser Lake, or the back roads behind Telkwa, consider a mud-terrain tire for the season. Check tire pressure before every trip. Lower pressure provides better traction on soft ground, but remember to air back up before hitting the highway home.
Recovery Gear: Do Not Leave Without It
This is not optional in Northern BC. Carry a tow strap rated for your vehicle’s weight, a pair of D-ring shackles, a shovel, and a set of traction boards. If your Jeep Wrangler or Gladiator has a winch, make sure the cable or synthetic rope is in good condition and the winch is operational. A high-lift jack is valuable on soft ground where a standard jack will sink. If you are heading to remote recreation sites between Hazelton and New Hazelton, along the Kispiox Valley, or up toward Babine Lake, there is a real chance that you will encounter a section of road where another vehicle is stuck or where you yourself will need to self-recover. Bring the gear. It weighs almost nothing relative to the peace of mind.
Fluids, Brakes, and Cooling
Backcountry driving is hard on vehicles. The constant low-speed, high-load driving over rough terrain heats up transmissions and stresses cooling systems. Before the season starts, check your coolant level and condition, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and engine oil. If you have not had your brakes inspected since last fall, book an appointment. Muddy forest service roads are hard on brake pads and rotors, and the hills around Smithers, Terrace, and Kitimat demand brakes that can stop you reliably on a steep downhill with a loaded truck. Our service department at Frontier can do a full multi-point inspection in under an hour.
Cargo and Roof Setup for Fishing and Camping
A spray-in bed liner protects your truck bed from wet gear, tackle boxes, and coolers full of fish. A tonneau cover keeps your gear dry during the unpredictable spring rains that roll through the Bulkley Valley. If you are hauling a canoe or kayak, a proper roof rack rated for the weight is essential. The Jeep Gladiator’s five-foot bed handles most camping setups, and the Mopar accessory line offers bed racks, crossbars, and cargo organizers designed specifically for Gladiator and RAM trucks. If you are running a rooftop tent, make sure your roof or bed rack is rated for the static load and that the tent is properly secured before driving forest service roads. Our parts department stocks Mopar accessories and can recommend the right setup for your vehicle and your style of camping.
